Coaching Education / Coaching Courses

CDYSL requires USSF coaching licenses for all Head Coaches of CDYSL Rostered Teams.  Information regarding this rule is found on the coaching licenses page.   The CDYSL Coaching Education Program is described here.  The CDYSL coaching requirement can be fulfilled by obtaining an ENY coaching license or a CDYSL coaching license.

The director of coaching for the CDYSL, Roy Pfeil with the approval of the Executive Board, has developed a CDYSL curriculum for the CDYSL Level 1 and Level 2 (formally " F" and "E") coaching licenses.  The Level 1 will be a 9 hour course and the Level 2 will be an 18 hour course.  The curriculum is similar in content to the ENYYSA certification courses but will be customized to fit the needs of the CDYSL coaches.  In addition, the courses will be significantly less costly than those presentably given by Eastern NY and will fulfill the coaching requirement that CDYSL has for all head coaches.

However, these CDYSL Level 1 and Level 2  licenses will not be accepted by Eastern NY or any other USYS State Associations as a pre requisite for taking a higher level coaching course. Therefore, if it is the intention of a coach to progress through the ENY certification, it is not recommended that these courses be taken. If a coach is unsure which coaching certification would work best for their needs a comparison of the CDYSL and ENY courses is posted below or  contact Roy Pfeil at rpfeil1@hotmail.com

CDYSL will also continue to sponsor Eastern NY coaching courses for those coaches who wish to follow this progression.  All course offerings will be posted on the CDYSL website.

List below you can find information on courses being offered by Eastern NY and CDYSL.  In addition,  a comparison of both license programs has been provided.

** - The ENY fee does not include facility costs which are generally $40 per registrant. Prices are subject to change.

*** - All coaches must start out at Level 1 or Level 2.  There is no waiver to level 3.  The 9 hours taken at Level 1 can be applied to the Level 2 course if the level 2 course is taken with a year.  The fee for the level 2 course will then be $95 instead of $120.  The 18 hours taken at the level 2 course can be applied to the level 3 course if the level 3 course is taken within 2 years.  The fee for the Level 3 course will then be $180 instead of  $210. Prices are subject to change.

## - The attainment of a National D license certification will allow you to go on and take a USSF National C license course.

^ - Attendance at all of the sessions of the CDYSL courses will certify you for the coaching education requirement.  You will not receive your certificate until you complete all other requirements as stated for that certificate.  If you attend a ENY course you must receive the certificate in order to meet the CDYSL coaching certification requirement.

Frequently asked questions regarding soccer coaching education courses sponsored by the CDYSL

Q - What is the difference between the CDYSL courses (Level 1, 2, & 3) and the ENYYSA courses (Level F, E, & D)?

A - The Director of Coaching (DOC) for the CDYSL is Roy Pfeil and he has taught the ENY courses (level F, E, & D) for over 30 years and to well over 4000 coaches in the CDYSL and throughout ENY.  The vast majority of these coaches wanted soccer instruction in techniques, small group and large group tactics, game strategies, practice planning and management, fitness training, etc so they could be a "few" steps ahead of the players they were coaching.  The ENY F, E, & D coaching courses provided all the instruction that allowed coaches to be effective and knowledgeable for the players they were coaching.  However, the great majority of coaches that have taken ENY courses-probably 95%  or more, and certainly under 75 coaches total over the 30 years-have not gone on to take a National Federation License (national C, B or A).  This is because, in part, the expenses of over $1000 for the course, and the time commitment of 9 days that the course takes.  Additionally, over the 30 years of doing the ENY courses, the CDYSL has sent down to the ENY coffers well over $100,000 in course fees.  As a result of all of the preceding, the CDYSL has created Level 1 (equivalent to ENY F), Level 2 (equivalent to ENY E) and Level 3 (equivalent to ENY D) at a cost that is generally $40 less than the ENY courses.  The CDYSL courses cover the exact same material as the ENY courses plus a lot more because of no testing requirements and a focus on coaching.  Finally, in doing two CDYSL courses this past spring to over 40 coaches, the CDYSL has put over $1000 into its own treasury and has saved clubs (which often pay for the coaching courses) $40 for each person that attended the CDYSL course.

Q - If I attend the Level 1 course for 9 hours and then decide to do the level 2 course for 18 hours do I need to attend the full 18 hours that the level 2 course requires?

A - Attendance at all sessions is mandatory.  If you attend the 9 hour level 1 course then you need to only attend the last 9 hours of the level 2 course to achieve the level 2 certification.  This must be done within 1 year of your taking of the level 1 course.  If you wait more than a year after taking the level 1 course and decide to take the level 2 course then you must take all 18 hours.  Additionally, based on your experience you also, can attend, right away, the level 2 or level 3 courses.  Currently, if you decide to take an ENY course the CDYSL DOC can recommend to the ENY DOC a waiver of the F or E so that you can take the ENY D. This fall there are going to be 2 level 1 courses in September to be followed in October, by the level 2 second 9 hours to complete the requirement for the level 2

The Eastern New York Youth Soccer Assoc. (ENYYSA) under the guidance of the Director of Coaching Education, Mike Swanwick, has established and published course descriptions and waiver policies for all coaches wishing to take coaching courses. All information about coaching courses, and the waiver procedure can be found on the ENY website at enysoccer.com, click on coaches corner tab and all course descriptions and waiver policies are there.

If you wish to apply for a waiver and go for a higher level course please read and follow the waiver policy directions very carefully. I would suggest that you also apply for the waiver as early as possible.

Listed below are the courses that are being organized this coming '10-'11seasonal year in the CDYSL. All of these courses will meet the CDYSL mandate and more may be added.

Attendance is mandatory at all sessions and there is a minimum number of attendees requirement for a course to take place. So register early.
